2016 CGIAR-CSI & Partners Meeting

SPURRING INNOVATION IN GEOSPATIAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT

This two-and-a-half day meeting provides a venue and showcase for the CGIAR-CSI and partners not only to share recent progress in geospatial technologies, methods, tools and learning, but also for this community to articulate a common vision of and commitment to its greater role in expanding the quantity and quality of public-good geospatial research products and services. Geospatial Data Platforms: How Open? How Big? How Linked?

Recent advances in geospatial/georeferenced data collection methods coupled with the drive toward more open data standards have expanded access to new, more up-to-date and more granular datasets. This creates unprecedented opportunities for new approaches to advance our understanding of ag sector dynamics and improve development outcomes, e.g., through near-real time monitoring of the sector performance and overall food security. Despite this potential, however, many technical capacity, coordination and implementation challenges remain.

In the CGIAR, for example, a new cross-cutting initiative; a Big Data and ICT Coordination Platform, is being proposed to facilitate the implementation of open access/open data and help innovate around improved data and advanced analytics and visualization. Proponents of the platform will present its vision and planned outcomes and impacts.

Various other initiatives on Open Geospatial Data (e.g., Geospatial Farming Systems Research Consortium) will be also introduced and their specific relevance to smallholder agricultural development will be discussed. As an outcome, we anticipate to better articulate the role of the geospatial community within and beyond the CGIAR in accelerating agricultural development, food security, and poverty alleviation. These dialogues can provide the foundation for action roadmaps.
